This artefact is the Power Ranger poster. What: The poster provides a quick reference for teachers to monitor and evaluate their own power usage while the tracking sheets allow the SRC teacher leaders to collect data and find patterns or areas of concern over the course of the term. This will allow them to set goals and improve the ecological footprint by the end of the year. Why: The Power Rangers is an initiative being spearheaded by the Student Representative Council. It fosters a sense of sustainability and responsibility as a 21st Century citizens. The Power Rangers was inspired by ‘Earth Hour’ which aims to reduce our ecological footprint. ‘Earth Hour’ encourages people to turn off their lights in order to raise awareness of global warming and get everyday people involved in discussions about what we can do to help. How and When: Each member of the Student Representative Council is part of the Power Rangers initiative. At lunchtime, from 1:00pm, the students check each of the 52 classrooms in the school. If the classroom is empty but the lights or the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) have been left on, the SRC members stick a yellow light bulb onto the poster belonging to that class. If the lights or IWB are left on a second consecutive day, the light bulb is changed from orange to red. If, however,  everything is turned off the light bulb stuck to the poster is green. All classrooms in the school are assessed four days a week (discluding Wednesdays to allow for the SRC meeting to take place). All the different coloured light bulbs, along with a tracking sheet listing each classroom, is placed in a distinctive box. Each box is kept in a set building: the Kindy building, A block, Greenland or the Bush Campus. There are Five boxes in all.

The Significant Impact

The Power Rangers takes this philosophy and transforms it from an annual drive to a daily action. In addition to the Power Rangers, the Student Representative Council bring issues of concern from their class to the fortnightly meetings. They also organise mufti days once a term in order to raise money for charity. They make and design the posters to raise student awareness for the scheduling of these events and collect the donations on the day. Finally. the Student Representative Council organises an annual Fete to raise money for Stewart House.

SEF Connections

Learning Element

Wellbeing - Sustaining and Growing

The Student Representative Council contributes to the wellbeing of others and the wider community by fundraising for various charities including Medecins Sans Frontieres and Taronga Zoo. The Student Representative Council is in charge of ensuring that students have a voice. At each fortnightly meeting, the members discuss issues that their fellow students have raised to them. These issues are then brainstormed and solutions are created. This has resulted in bubblers being put onto the lower lowers and in the creation of the Power Rangers initiative. The SRC allows students to connect and succeed through the the use of peer support as the older members are actively encouraged to work with the younger ones. With regards to the Power Rangers initiative, a senior SRC member is rostered on the check classroom with a junior member to further ensure a successful program.

Teaching Element

Collaborative Practice - Sustaining and Growing

The Student Representative Council is responsible for implementing the annual ‘Stewart House Fete’, the school's largest fundraising enterprise. The Stewart House Fete involves the whole school and all teachers. All senior members of the Student Representative Council collaborate with Upper Primary teachers to design and implement stalls that sell various good or services. The SRC stage leaders also collaborate with the other teachers in the school to organise various activities such as a jumping castle and a second hand toy stall.

Leading Element

School Planning - Sustaining and Growing

Leadership - Sustaining and Growing

The Student Representative Council is a major part of the leadership implemented within Chatswood Public School. The SRC members are considered to be the leaders of their class and the Power Rangers initiative provides them with opportunities to participate in the community and be good role models. The Student Representative Council is also directly involved in school planning as they directly influence the annual school report. The SRC include reminders of school events in the newsletter and designs posters to boost student participation in the tri-annual mufti days. All SRC events are included in the calendar and SRC members are chosen to make announcements at assemblies or during morning lines to ensure the events are run successfully.
