What: The Healthy Skills for Life Program is a fundamental movement program undertaken by students at Chatswood Public School throughout 2016 and during Term One 2017. When: The professionally led program was initiated in 2016 with an eight week program for each term for Stages 1-3 and has continued into 2017 for Stage One students. How: The artefacts shows students are taught skills to become self-aware and regulate emotions in order to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, exhaustion and irritability as well as encourage a deep understanding of values and emotional responses. Why: Through the Healthy Skills for Life Program students develop the physical, social, emotional and attentional self-regulating strategies and skills for flourishing in the future.

The Significant Impact

In 2016 all Stage 1-3 classes at Chatswood Public School participated in a six week professionally led session. In 2017, all Stage One classes at Chatswood Public School participated in a one hour ‘Values, Breathing and Mindfulness’ session. At the culmination of the session teachers were given a Life Skills Group Kit with follow up lessons to extend students self-awareness abilities and improve self-regulating skills using strategies.The program, developed to cultivate wellbeing, resilience and lifelong learning, focuses on students developing physical, social, emotional and attentional self-regulating strategies and skills.

Learning Culture - Excelling

Positive respectful relationships is necessary among students and staff to promote student wellbeing and ensure good conditions for student learning. As a result, students who participated throughout Early Stage One to Stage Three at Chatswood Public School was provided with opportunities to further develop their social and emotional competence.

 

Wellbeing - Sustaining and Growing

The activities undertaken aim to help to boost confidence, teach self respect and respect of others, encourage altruism, develop empathy, develop concentration and focus, release stress and anxiety, improve quality of attention, encourage healthy and positive relationships.

Teaching Elements

Collaborative Practice - Sustaining and Growing

The Healthy Skills for Life program support student learning by enhancing learning readiness, improving working memory, creativity, attention span and reaction speeds. Teachers are able to carry on with the program with class lessons provided.
