The artefacts is a sample page from all three Tell Them from Me surveys. What and When: Chatswood Public School (CPS) participates on an annual basis in the Tell Them from Me surveys, created and facilitated by the Department of Education. Students take the Tell Them from Me student survey biannually, terms 1 and 4. While in term 4, teachers participate in the Focus on Learning teacher survey and parents are invited to contribute to the Partners in Learning parent survey.

Why: The surveys provide valuable, up to date data, on school performance in relation to all three aspects of the School Excellence Framework, Learning, Teaching and Leading, from the perspective of students, teachers and parents. How: The data collected by the surveys is analysed by the Learning and Support Team and results shared with the School Executive and classroom teachers. Areas of need are identified by school leaders and the Learning and Support team, who explore potential future programs and initiatives to meet these needs.

The Significant Impact

The student survey provides valuable insight into student engagement, on a social, institutional and intellectual level, as well as their sense of wellbeing. This provides information that is used in our self-assessment of quality teaching practices within our school and identification of areas of need relating to student wellbeing. An example of this is the implementation of the Circle Solutions wellbeing program within CPS this year, in response to the 2016 survey results indicating students may benefit from an increased sense of belonging and having a voice, on an institutional and social level.

The teacher survey provides the school executive with the teachers perspectives on the effectiveness of CPS in relation to delivery of quality teaching, collaborative teaching practices and the support provided by the school’s leaders. Data provides information that is used by CPS to self-assess our strategic direction of Quality teaching and leadership as set out in CPS school plan 2015-2017. This informs initiatives by Chatswoods senior executive to further support staff, such as the Mentoring program that has been initiated in 2017.

Analysis

Analysis

In our self-assessment process the leadership team analysed a range of evidence to support our judgement.

SEF Connections

Learning Element

Learning Culture - Excelling

Survey data results indicate that students at CPS value school outcomes, have positive homework behaviours and are interested and motivated. Results show evidence of positive, respectful relationships existing between students and staff that promote students wellbeing and ensure good conditions for student learning.

Wellbeing - Sustaining and Growing

Survey results indicate that quality teaching and professional practise are evident in CPS’s learning environment, providing students with opportunities to connect, succeed and thrive. Students feel safe and feel they have positive teacher-student relationships. CPS implements programs to address apparent areas of need, such as student sense of belonging.

Curriculum and Learning - Sustaining and Growing

Survey results indicate that extra-curricular opportunitites are significant and are highly commended and supported by both teachers and parents, who feel CPS extra-curricular programs contribute to student development in line with the school’s values and priorities.

Assessment and Reporting - Sustaining and Growing

Parent survey results indicate parents have an understanding of what their children are learning and receive regular information to support progression to the next level.

Teaching Element

Effective Classroom Practice - Sustaining and Growing

The Learning and Support Team uses student data and feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of CPS’s teaching practices and our current programs.

Data Skills and Use - Sustaining and Growing

The Learning and Support Team communicate survey results to school leaders and teachers so they can incorporate in their planning for learning. Gaps in performance are identified through data collection and programs implemented.

Collaborative Practice - Sustaining and Growing

Survey results indicate that teachers work together to improve teaching and learning in their year groups and stages.

Leading Element

Leadership - Sustaining and Growing

Through the undertaking and analysis of TTFM student, teacher and parent surveys, CPS solicits and addresses feedback on school performance.

Management Practices and Processes - Sustaining and Growing

The TTFM surveys allow opportunities for students and the community to provide constructive feedback on school practices and procedures.
