The Maths Olympiad initiative serves an integral role within the Gifted and Talented Program implemented at Chatswood Public School. Artefact 1 identifies sample content from a lesson administered in Term 1 of 2017, whereas Artefact 2 is a collection of results obtained in the 2016 schooling year. Why Maths Olympiad? Content considered in the Maths Olympiad program is tailored to connect with gifted and talented students through problem posing and solution analysis. How is it used? Identified students from Stage 3 are selected for streamed classes, whilst students from both Opportunity Classes are automatically placed due to preexisting diagnostic testing. What is the benefit? This program allows us to foster wider learning alliances, differentiate learning content, and enhance teaching practice through collaborative teaching.

The Significant Impact

The aforementioned artefacts have been included to provide insight into the pedagogical approach and level of content being undertaken by gifted and talented students at Chatswood Public School. In providing students with an avenue to share and justify their mathematical reasoning, we are able to nurture communication skills. Consequently, networking is fostered through peer mediation, ICT integration and the building of autonomous capital within our students.

In our self-assessment process the leadership team analysed a range of evidence to support our judgement.

SEF Connections

Learning Element

Curriculum and Learning - Sustaining and Growing

The school has enhanced its differentiated curriculum provision and learning alliances by engaging with the the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads.

Student Performance Measures - Sustaining and Growing

CPS’ School Plan 2015-2017 identified that an average of 60% of our Year 6 student cohort perform at the highest level of NAPLAN and go on to access Selective High Schools. Initiatives, such as the content articulated through Artefact A, play an integral role in regards to achieving these results. The results outlined in Artefact B further support this notion.

Teaching Element

Effective Classroom Practice - Sustaining and Growing

The annotations included in Artefact A provide insight into the evaluative pedagogy afforded by the Maths Olympiad initiative. In this way, students are constantly being provided with explicit, specific and timely formative feedback on how to improve.

Collaborative Practice - Sustaining and Growing

The lesson considered in Artefact A was administered by a Year 5 teacher and an outsourced mathematical consultant. This artefact demonstrates how teachers within our school are collaborating with others to engage particular student groups.

Learning and Development - Sustaining and Growing

In working with a mathematical consultant, teachers who partake in the administration of the Maths Olympiad program are able to work on improving their numeracy teaching methods.
